CYBERminder™ uses physical devices called keys which simply plug into your PC.
The SUPERVISE key has software drivers which are installed on the PC the first time this key is connected. This is a one-time-only procedure.
In day-to-day operation the SUPERVISE key is designed to be used by adults to enable unrestricted Internet access.
Children use an age-appropriate PROTECT key when they want to access the Internet.
All CYBERminder™ products block sites designed for, or containing, adult-only material and content with an adult-only theme. This includes pornography, sites relating to sexual practices and gambling. Designed for the youngest Internet users, CYBERminder™ Under 9 key blocks the following sites:
Designed for older children who want to do more with the Internet, CYBERminder™ 9-12 still provides extensive filtering and protection. It blocks the same categories as the CYBERminder™ Under 9 key, but additionally allows three popular search engines:
CYBERminder™ permits these to be used only in their "Safe Search" modes, which restricts the results they produce to those suitable for children.
Teenagers are given more freedom on the Internet using their CYBERminder™ Teenager key. A degree of trust is therefore extended to these older children, who should be more aware of the dangers present on the Internet and how to stay safe. We encourage parents to direct their children to one of the advisory web sites that can help explain and guide them as they explore more of what the Internet offers:
Like all CYBERminder™ products, the CYBERminder™ Teenager key blocks sites designed for, or containing, adult-only material and content including pornography, sites relating to sexual practices and gambling. As with the CYBERminder™ 9-12 key, the three most popular search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo) are permitted with "Safe" Search mode enforced.
CYBERminder™ is designed to only allow Internet access with a key attached. CYBERminder™ enforces age-appropriate restrictions based on which key is attached.
CYBERminder™ uses USB technology to attach to your PC. Most modern PCs have several USB sockets, located on both the front and back of the system unit. USB sockets can sometimes be found on the back of LCD monitors and on some multimedia keyboards. USB is commonly used to connect printers, scanners and storage devices. Modern keyboards and mice also use USB. If you are short of USB connections, or if they are located inconveniently for attaching a key each time you want to use the Internet, a USB hub is recommended. This is a gadget which acts much like an extension lead with multiple outlets and are readily available from computer shops.
With any PROTECT key attached, CYBERminder™ blocks sites with adult-oriented content. Each PROTECT key adds additional age-appropriate blocking.
With the SUPERVISE key attached, CYBERminder™ does not block any sites, so adults can access as usual.
The CYBERminder™ icon is displayed onscreen and reflects the PROTECT key attached and operating.
Many sites on the Internet are not moderated or do not take into account the needs of parents to protect their children, examples of which are those that allow uploading of content. Unfortunately, although there may be material on these sites which is perfectly acceptable for children, they can easily stumble across content which is not appropriate, especially for younger children. Some search sites provide a mechanism to preview any web site before visiting it. This means that although the site itself may be blocked, the only way for us to prevent children accessing the same content via a search engine.CYBERminder™ provides three levels of blocking which we have estimated as appropriate for three age ranges of children. Parents should use their own discretion as to which suits their own child's needs according to their emotional maturity.
Use your SUPERVISE key to allow your child temporary unrestricted Internet access while under direct adult supervision. Once they have accessed the content they need, they should revert to using their age-appropriate PROTECT key.
